Irritable Bowelll
Irritable Bowelll is a painful condition that causes one or more of these symptoms within the abdomen; diarrhea, constipation, cramping and bloating. Irritable Bowelll affects the Large Intestine where stool is stored. Although Irritable Bowelll is very painful, it is not a disease. It is called a functional disorder, which means that the Large Intestine is not functioning properly, which causes the discomfort within the abdomen. Women are known to show the symptoms of Irritable Bowelll more than men. Some of these women may notice an increase in their symptoms during their menstral cycle.

The main symtoms of Irritable Bowelll are pain or discomfort in the abdominal area, and chronic diarrhea, constipation, or a combination of both. Other symptoms may include a bloated abdomen, whitish mucus in the stool, or a feeling that you haven't finished a bowell movement.
Doctors suspect that Irritable Bowelll may be stress related. When you have Irritable Bowelll the nerves and muscles in the bowell seem to be extra sensitive. The muscles may contract to much when you eat causing pain. These contractions may cause diarrhea while eating or shortly after.
Your Doctor may suspect that you have Irritable Bowelll due to your symtoms. There are specific symptoms that a doctor will look for which is called the "Rome Criteria". Your doctor may order other medical tests to be sure that you don't have another health problem that causes the same symptoms. To diagnose Irritable Bowelll you may be asked to take some blood tests and a physical exam. Some other tests that may be included are a Lower Gastrointestinal (GI) Series, which x-rays your abdomen to see any problems in the Large Intestine. Another test is a Colonoscopy, which is when the doctor inserts a tiny camera into your colon to take pictures to see if there are any problems there.

There are treatments for irritable bowelll. These treatments may include diet changes, medicines, and stress relief. Your doctor might be able to help you with a treatment plan to see what works best for you. Some things that work for one person do not always work for another.
Some of the diet changes may be more fibre in your daily diet. Smaller more frequent meals throuout the day, may also relieve the symptoms of Irritable Bowelll. If changes to your diet do not have the desired effect there are medications that can be perscribed by your doctor. These medications may include laxitives to relieve constipation, Antispasmodics to control the spasms, or Antidepressants have been shown to relieve the cramping also. If your symtoms are severe you may be perscribed Lotronix, this medication is only perscribed if none of the other treatments are effective.
Although Irritable Bowelll is very painful it does not cause any long lasting damage to the colon.
